In the event two players have the same hand the player with the highest valued hand wins.
I.e.
Player #1 has two pair (pair of ten's and a pair of four's).
Player #2 has two pair (pair of Jack's and a pair of Two's).
Player #2 will win the hand as their Jacks are higher than player #1's tens. |
Each player is dealt two cards face down. These cards are known as the "pocket" cards or the "hole" cards. Then there is a round of betting. Players decide to fold, call or raise in turn based solely on the value of those two cards.
The dealer then deals three cards face up in the middle of the table. This is known as "the flop". These three cards are communal cards and are shared by each of the players who remain in the hand. Remember - the idea is to make the best possible 5 card hand, and each player now has their two hole cards and the three on the board to make up their 5 card hand.
There is another round of betting, and again players decide to stay in the game or get out quickly based on the value of the 5 cards now available to them.
The dealer then deals one more card face up onto the table. This is known as the "turn card". Each player now has 6 cards to choose from, the four on the table and their two hole cards. A poker hand is only 5 cards, therefore each player chooses only their best 5.
There is another round of betting.
The dealer then deals the final card face up in the middle. This is known as "the river".
The remaining players now have seven cards from which to make the best possible 5 card poker hand.
A final round of betting takes place.
After all bets have been made, the remaining players turn over their two hole cards, the best hand is established, and the winner takes the chips.
If at any point in the hand only one player remains, i.e. hasn't folded, that player wins the pot.
For example: The dealer deals two cards to each player. Three players call the bet and four players fold. The last player to act in this round of betting decides to bet all of their chips (known as going "all-in"). All the other players decide not to risk losing all their chips and fold.
The player who made the all-in bet takes the pot and wins the hand before any of the communal cards are dealt. The cards are shuffled and the next hand is dealt. |
| House Rules |
- Players start with 5000 chips.
- If a player bets out of turn then the bet stands and the player can only call if the following players decide to raise in that round of betting or fold.
- No string bets. eg. State how many chips you are going to bet or raise.
- Once you have thrown your cards in you must not pull them back again to look at.
- Many players have expressed there displeasure of people advising other players what to do when another player has bet against them. If you are not involved in a hand and a player makes a bet please do not give advice or badger the players who are still playing. eg to call, fold or raise.
- If a player leaves the table and betting comes round to them there cards will be discarded. Once the cards have been discarded they must not be shown to any player including the player who's cards they were.
- Games will start at 7:00pm, any player who does not arrive on time can still participate and will be dealt in but chips will be taken from them every time they are meant to be in the big and small blinds. If a player is going to be late they must inform the tournament director so the seat can be reserved. The seat will only remain reserved for 1 hour, after which they will be illegible to enter the tournament.
