The first league game of 2006 got underway on Saturday with 21 players involved. With no new faces, the game started with tension in the air as everyone wanted to get off to a good start to the season.
After a slow start to the game, David Cook was first to leave the game after his unusual more aggressive play backfired and he got caught off Swiss Dave holding trips against his pair. A lucky hand for Steve Y who slow played KK and allowed Dave M on big blind to match up two pair on the flop came true by catching a King on the river.
The game then opened up with players going out in two's and by 10:30 it was down to the final table.
Lee B, Hamid T and Steve Y got involved in three-way action with Lee and Steve Y all-in. With Lee holding a pair of Queens and Hamid with a pair of Nines, Steve had about a 1% chance of winning with AQ unsuited. Down with the flop and unbelievably QAA giving Lee a full house Queens full of Aces but giving Steve the better full house of Aces full of Queens. Hamid also picked up a full house when a nine came down but it was to late for Lee and he left the game with one point and Steve had tripled through and was now looking strong enough to compete with Swiss who was well stacked all night.
Chalkie went in eighth (his first final table appearance). Cush, who has never started well in the league and was desperate to make a change, held out for seventh place after being low stacked and forced to go all-in with a pair of threes. Unfortunately Steve was holding a pair of sixes and nothing was to help on the board.
It wasn't long before there was only three players left and after Steve knocked out Alan J with a pair of Aces he was now the stronger player for the final two. A head's up final between the arrogant, aggressive Swiss and the laid back Steve lasted for about half an hour when the chip balance switched after Swiss called Steve's all-in holding KQ, Steve turned over A4 but was disappointed to see a King and a Queen in the flop. Swiss back in control of the chips and using his aggressive style left Steve now with only about 10% of the total chips no option but to go all-in with a King high. Swiss turned over AJ and with a Ace on the board Swiss took maximum points from the first game of the season.
What a pisser.
